At Fushifaru Maldives, a 5-star boutique resort nestled in the stunning Lhaviyani Atoll, we launched a pioneering ‘Coral Propagation’ project in 2020. Our goal was to breathe new life into our coral reef and contribute to ocean conservation amidst challenges like plastic pollution and rising sea temperatures.
Working closely with our dedicated dive team and in-house marine biologist, we embarked on a mission to attach broken corals to specialized frames submerged in our pristine lagoon. The progress has been nothing short of remarkable since the project’s inception.
Natalia Fernández Cabrera, our esteemed marine biologist, brings a wealth of expertise as a Marine Zoologist, Exotic Vet Technician, and Diving Instructor. She notes, “We have increased the genetic variability up to 60% in our lagoon, and biodiversity is also on the rise.”
The success of our initiative is evident in the growth of multiple coral frames, forming new colonies that create an ideal environment for coral growth. Although the process may be gradual, it has proven to be effective in rejuvenating our coral reefs.
Our ‘Coral Propagation’ project has become a highlight for our guests, who delight in snorkeling around the frames to witness the thriving corals up close. Moreover, the success of our project has inspired similar initiatives among other Maldivian resorts, creating a network of vibrant and healthy coral reefs across the country.
This endeavor serves as a testament to our collective efforts in marine conservation. By actively participating in projects like coral propagation, we showcase our commitment to protecting and preserving our precious marine ecosystems.
At Fushifaru Maldives, we invite everyone to join hands in safeguarding the environment. Together, we can create a sustainable future and restore the natural beauty and diversity of our oceans.
